The Art of Pretense

an idea

Form over function, style over substance and a complete lack of originality, welcome to the brave new world of art and music.

I get a lot of packages sent to me for remixing. Regrettably as of late I see a trend: a boring, lazy half-assed trend. More and more the packages that arrive on my desk include NO original material, by that I mean every single sound, loop , patch, graphic, image, font, filter and process has been downloaded or copied from a sample CD, or pirated software. Not one original thought or image is embedded in the project, everything is either borrowed copied or stolen. And to truly cement their places amongst the ranks of twatish greats our little plunder-nauts don’t even bother to change the presets or process the loops…

hipster

The sonic equivalent of a 3 year old looking lovingly into the potty and proclaiming with pride and bluster, “Look what I did.” I hate to rain on your parade Daisy mae but all you did was eat someone Else’s dinner and take a shit, while turning food into feces is in itself a rather impressive biological achievement it is also painfully common and guess what…? everybody else does it too, just like the thousands of other bedroom rioters that are using the exact same sounds and loops as you are. Want to know why you never seem to get that big break you so rightly deserve? It’s because you sound exactly like everybody else sound for sound, loop for loop.

Let me share a secret with you: art/music is not a fashion show, it is an expression of truth. Artists are supposed to go to places most people fear and then interpret those places in a new and unique way. Share with the world a beautiful and tragic view of this mortal coil, regurgitate the mundane in a powerful and poignant way, stab at the heart of pedestrian values with satire or parody, throw a mirror into the face of ignorance and shine a light, make a statement worthy of our attentions…something that has a grande and personal design.

If music is your thing, your passion your great and true expression of self then what does that say about you as an artist, as a person, if you can’t even be bothered to learn the tools of your trade? If you suffice on borrowing other people’s work, rather than you own, that makes you part of the problem not the solution.
